If you want to do Mind Mapping using pen and paper the rules are quite simple. They can be represented in a traditional list format or they can be se out in a mind map. Which of these is easier to understand? Which communicates the idea more clearly?

  • Use blank paper
  • Turn the paper sideways
  • Start in the centre
  • Make a colourful image of the topic
  • Add the main themes
  • Use key words rather than sentences
  • Print on a wavy line
  • Line is thicker towards the centre
  • Branch off main themes
  • Add second level of thoughts
  • Continue with third & forth levels
  • Jump from topic to topic as you please
  • Keep going until you have captured all your thoughts
